A Mill Pond Village Rebuilt After Fire
Surveyor John Mudget Mack noted the future Manchester site as a strong mill location on the River Raisin as early as 1824. John Gilbert purchased the land in 1826, and with Emanuel Case and Harry Gilbert put up the first mill in 1832, platting the village the following year -- a mill that later burned in an 1853 fire and was rebuilt.
